Top 12 Facebook Marketplace posting strategies

Facebook Marketplace is a quick and precise way to post your unwanted items and make a little money.  It has surpassed Craigslist as the go to place for unloading your stuff.  If you’ve hired an organizer, this will help you augment that cost, at the very least.  Also, no more clutter!  Here are some posting tips to help you weed through flaky people and get the item on to the next owner:

  1. Price aggressively - it’ll move quick.  Don’t try to make an extra $20 - remember, you are downsizing no matter what.

  2. Create at least a short description.  People like to see that you’ve put a little thought into and it doesn’t have to be long.

3. Always add in product dimensions - people will always ask and it slows down the process if you don’t have them.

4. Get Venmo or similar cash app that is popular in your area.  Always ask if they can pay upfront.  This automatically creates a sense of urgency.

5. Take pictures/post logos, serial numbers, model numbers - always.

6. For best searchability, add in identifying words.  These will help ad rise to the top when users search for very specific items:

-Honda Lawn Mower - not ‘Mower’

-Color

-Brand Name - Ashley Furniture, Toyota, Samsung, Calvin Klein etc.

-Model number

-Serial number if appropriate

-List age if known

-List how many owners

-List number of hours if applicable

7. If electronics or has a motor, do a 10 second video of it running/working and add to post.

8. Photos - do more than one always - get shots of any imperfections up front.  People don’t want to show up and see you were hiding a tear or blemish.  Let them know right away so you can refer back to it.

9. Ask for their cell phone number if you are meeting them.  It’s good to be able to get their attention quickly if you need to communicate.

10. Create a bit of a sense of urgency.  Don’t be afraid to ask:

-”Can you pick it up today?”

-”It’s been a popular item so let me know asap”

-”If I don’t hear from you within one hour I’ll have to move on to the next in line”

-”It does have a small stain on the XXXXX, just so you know, but it’s very solid”

11. Don’t give out your address unless they have committed to a time to show up or have paid up front.

12. Try to honor the first in line, even if someone else is willing to pay more.  Also, sellers can be rated like Uber drivers, so you don’t want low stars.
